Books for a First Class Graduate – A Cake Story

At LolasBakes, we believe every celebration deserves a story – one that is sweet, thoughtful, and beautifully personal. This cake was no exception. Commissioned for a brilliant graduate who achieved a First Class degree, we knew it had to be something truly special… and a little different.

So, we made books. But not just any books – well-read, well-loved, and proudly standing tall like the student they were made for.

The Concept

Graduating with a First Class is no small feat – it is a result of discipline, late nights, countless hours of study, and pages upon pages of learning. We wanted to celebrate his efforts with something more than a traditional cake.

Inspired by the idea that a First Class student must have “read lots of books,” we created three edible volumes to sit upright on a shelf-like base – a unique twist from the typical laid-down book cake.

Each spine told a story:

📘 Congrats – because it is a celebration worth shouting about

📕 Maths Geek – a cheeky nod to the graduate’s chosen field

📗 It’s a First – simple, bold, and proud

Design Details

The covers were hand-carved and decorated in rich shades of navy, crimson, and classic black, with gold accents for excellence and the shimmer. We added tiny fondant embellishments as nods to scholarly style.

And the pages? Each book was layered with delicately torn wafer paper, giving the realistic effect of slightly weathered books – a touch that brought the cakes to life.

Flavours They Loved

We didn’t just stop at visuals. These edible masterpieces were made from the graduate’s favourite flavours:

• A soft, indulgent chocolate sponge with rich chocolate buttercream

• And a light, classic vanilla sponge with vanilla bean buttercream

Both were layered with care, baked with love, and decorated with precision – just like every cake we make at LolasBakes.
