Starting a Cake Business: Learning from an Experienced Cake Designer

Starting a cake business is an exciting journey.

Many people search for advice on how to start a cake business from home.

For many people, it begins the same way — baking for family and friends, discovering the joy of creating something beautiful, and realising how much people appreciate a well-made cake.

That’s how my own journey began.

Why Many Cake Businesses Begin at Home

What started as making birthday cakes for my sons gradually grew into something much bigger. Friends began asking for cakes, celebrations followed, and before long I realised that cake design had become more than just a hobby.

But turning a passion for baking into a business involves much more than creating beautiful cakes.

Why Learning from an Experienced Designer Matters

Cake design is both an art and a craft. It takes time to learn how flavour, structure, and design work together. Beyond that, there are many practical aspects to running a cake business — pricing your work, managing orders, working with clients, and developing a style that feels truly your own.

The Value of Hands-On Learning

When you’re starting out, it can feel like there is so much to learn.

That’s where learning from someone with experience can make a real difference.

Working alongside an experienced cake designer allows you to see techniques first-hand, ask questions, and gain insights that simply can’t be learned from videos alone. Small details — from achieving the right cake texture to creating smooth finishes — often become much clearer when someone shows you step by step.

Hands-on learning also helps build confidence. Instead of feeling unsure about your next step, you begin to understand the process and develop your own rhythm as a cake designer.

For anyone beginning their journey, my advice is simple:

Take the time to learn the fundamentals well. Focus on flavour just as much as design. And remember that building a cake business is something that grows gradually.

Cake Classes and Mentoring at LolasBakes

For those who would like guidance along the way, I occasionally offer a small number of hands-on classes and mentoring sessions here at LolasBakes.

These include:

1:1 mentoring sessions for those starting or growing a cake business

Small group baking classes for beginners and hobby bakers

Cupcake decorating workshops, including deluxe floral cupcake designs

Each session is designed to be relaxed, practical, and supportive — a space where you can ask questions, develop your skills, and gain confidence in your craft.

Every cake designer begins somewhere.

With the right guidance and encouragement, the journey can be both rewarding and incredibly fulfilling.
